book review : science fiction : a thousand pieces of you (firebird #1)

Marguerite Caine's physicist parents are known for their groundbreaking achievements. Their most astonishing invention, called the Firebird, allows users to jump into multiple universes.  But then Marguerite's father is murdered, and the killer—her parent's assistant Paul— escapes into another dimension before the law can touch him.  Marguerite refuses to let the man who destroyed her family go free, so she races after Paul through different universes, always leaping into another version of herself. But she also meets alternate versions of the people she knows—including Paul, whose life entangles with hers in increasingly familiar ways. Before long she begins to question Paul's guilt—as well as her own heart. And soon she discovers the truth behind her father's death is far more sinister than she expected. 5/5 stars!

Set in Omaha, Nebraska in 1986, Eleanor & Park is the story of two teens who fall in love, even though they both try to resist it.  Eleanor doesn't need love right now.  Her life is complicated enough as it is.  Her stepdad is dangerous, and her mom won't stick up for her.  And Park doesn't want anything to do with the "weird, new girl."  But through music and comic books, the two start to form a relationship, one that can overcome anything.  5/5 stars!

Salt to the Sea is the story of four young adults and their converging paths in occupied Germany during World War II. Joana, a Lithuanian nurse, is traveling to find her mother who has been put into a refugee camp; Florian, a Prussian, is looking for his sister and running away from something; Emilia, a Pole, is searching for the boy she loves; and Alfred, is a German sailor who is waiting for his destiny.
Joana, Florian, and Emilia all meet each other on the road. Together, they, and the rest of their group, make their way to Gotenhafen where they get on board the Wilhelm Gustloff. Just when the trio thinks they are finally on their way to safety, the ship gets hit by torpedoes from a Russian submarine and the ship starts to sink. The four must fight to survive as the ship is severely overcrowded and there are only 12 lifeboats. 5/5 stars!

book review : realistic fiction : extraordinary means

Extraordinary Means is the story of Lane and Sadie, two teens who live in Latham House, a sanatorium for teens with an incurable strain of tuberculosis.  Lane used to know Sadie from years ago, but instead of being the quiet girl he remembers, she is now a rebellious troublemaker.  As the two grow closer, Sadie and her friends teach Lane the secrets of Latham House: how to steal internet, how to sneak into town, and how to disable the med sensors they must wear at all times.  But there are consequences to having secrets, particularly at Latham House.
Told in alternating points of view, Extraordinary Means is a darkly funny story about doomed friendships, first love, and the rare miracle of second chances. 5/5 stars!
