Our Mission

The mission and purpose of the Greene County Literacy Coalition is:
  • To develop new programs and to promote public awareness of the problems of illiteracy in our country, and more specifically, in our county
  • To recruit, train, and supervise volunteer tutors
  • To attract students, or “learners,” who want to learn to read or to improve their current skills and matching them with appropriate tutors

WHO WE ARE

The Greene County Literacy Coalition is a cooperative educational endeavor of Greene County:
  • individuals
  • clubs
  • churches
  • businesses
  • social services
As well as the Indiana public libraries of:
  • Bloomfield
  • Jasonville
  • Linton
  • Worthington
And the Indiana Adult Literacy Coalition.

The Greene County Literacy Coalition consists of a volunteer Board of Directors, a part-time Coordinator, and roughly 30 volunteer tutors.

what we do

We are here to serve all Greene County adults, 18 years of age and older who are not currently enrolled in a school program.

We provide volunteer one-on-one tutoring in:
  • HiSET exam Preparation
  • Reading and Writing
  • Basic Math
  • Living Skills
  • English as a Second Language (ESL)
Tutors are integral to the functioning of the Greene County Literacy Coalition. With our private tutors, who are all volunteers, learners have the benefit of studying at their own pace, toward their own goals and with materials matched to their individual needs.

Learners gain the friendship and support of the tutor, who is trained to teach and understand adult learners.
